  Chapter One

The rain was coming down in buckets and the night had a definite chill in the air. Of course, Denver being the “Mile High City” meant that it often was cooler than the rest of Colorado. Kiera was working the late shift at the diner where she was employed. There were only a few customers at this time of night, and she made the rounds to make sure that they didn’t need anything at the moment.

She was excited with anticipation, waiting anxiously for him to arrive. He had come into the diner late one night and struck up a conversation with her. Before long, Kiera found herself telling him her life story. His name was Bradley Stephenson and he was kind and sweet. One night during the winter he came in and insisted on taking her home because it was snowing. Kiera was a little concerned that he might have something more on his mind, but he was a true gentleman. He escorted her to her door, gave her a gentle kiss on her forehead, and made sure that she locked the door before he left.

She had come to her parents late in their life, and they had kept her sheltered. Her parents were devoted to each other and Kiera often felt lonely growing up. She never dated, and as an only child of older parents, she spent a lot of her time helping to take care of them, especially when her mother became ill. She passed in Kiera’s senior year of high school. Her father hung on until she graduated but he, too, became ill and died shortly thereafter. Kiera knew that it wasn’t the illness that had taken him, but loneliness and a broken heart.

With no family or friends to speak of, Kiera had to learn how to take care of herself. She had no formal training, and college was out of the question. What little money that her parents had saved was eaten up with medical bills. So she bounced from one menial job to another to keep a roof over her head and food in her belly.

Now Kiera had someone in her life. Someone who was interested in her and wanted to take care of her. He had told her as much. She knew that she was naive, even after living on her own for five years, but it was so nice to have someone in the world who cared about her.

There was just one thing that troubled Kiera. Lately, she had begun having dreams. Not just any old dreams, but very hot, erotic dreams in which she was having wonderful, melt-into-a-puddle sex. She couldn’t see her lover’s face but she could tell that he was a large man with a muscular chest and broad shoulders. He didn’t fit the descripti
on of Bradley, who was not as tall or broad as her dream lover.

Most people would think that Kiera was just having normal dreams of a young woman, but Kiera knew better. Her dreams always came true. It had started happening when she was a young child. She would have a dream about some event and it would come true a short time later. Her parents never believed her about the dreams so she never talked to anyone about her ability. She was afraid that people would think she was crazy. Could her dreams just be the result of a sexually frustrated young woman or were they the portent of things to come?

The bell over the door jingled and Kiera was brought abruptly back to reality. She looked to see who came in and smiled as Bradley strolled into the diner. He was handsome and sophisticated. From the way he dressed and his mannerisms, Kiera could tell that he was well educated and most likely came from a wealthy family. So what does he see in me? Kiera asked herself.

She didn’t think of herself as particularly pretty. She had long auburn hair and blue eyes. Her complexion was creamy smooth, but she was a little curvy. Some would say voluptuous, but she just thought of herself as fat in certain spots.

Kiera made her way over to him as he took a seat at one of the booths. Bradley gave her a wide smile that showed off his perfectly straight white teeth.

“Hi, beautiful, how are you tonight?”

Kiera blushed at the endearment. “Fine, I’m glad to see you. Can I get you anything?”

“I’ll have you for starters, but in the meantime, I’ll have a cup of coffee.”

Kiera giggled and walked off to bring him his order. When she returned, she placed the cup in front of him on the table. Before she could move away, Bradley reached out and took hold of her hand.

“Listen, gorgeous, when do you get off?”

Kiera warmed at the sound of his voice. “In about half an hour.”

“Great, I’ll meet you out back and give you a ride home. Can’t have my girl walking home in this storm,” he said as he stroked the back of her hand with his thumb.

Kiera glowed at the concern that he showed for her well-being.

“Thank you, I really wasn’t looking forward to walking home in this mess.”

The man released her hand and took a sip of his coffee. Just as he was about to speak again a voice called out from the kitchen, “Kiera! Your order is up!” Kiera smiled and walked away to retrieve the order. As she looked back over her shoulder, Bradley gave a small wave of his hand and mouthed the words, “See you soon.”

Kiera gathered the plates of food and made her way over to the customers’ table. She looked over and saw that the booth where Bradley had sat was empty. His coffee cup still there with a few dollars next to it. Kiera couldn’t wait for her shift to end and she looked forward to the ride home.

The waitress who was to work the next shift arrived a short time later, and Kiera handed things off to her. As she put her worn coat on, she said good night to the cook and made her way out the back door of the diner. Just as the door closed behind her, Kiera heard someone call out her name.

  “Kiera!”

She jerked her head toward the voice. Just then a huge bolt of lightning flashed and then all went black as something was thrown over her head. Hard hands grabbed her and she began kicking and screaming. Kiera knew that no one would hear her out here in the alley, especially with the storm raging. She fought as hard as she could, but then she felt something prick her leg and realized that she had been stuck with a needle.

Kiera continued to fight but her body was slowly losing strength and it was becoming more difficult to move. As her legs finally gave out from under her, she felt herself hoisted up and then tossed into the trunk of a car. Her last thought before she succumbed to unconsciousness was that she knew the voice that had called her name. What she didn’t know was what was going to happen to her. Whatever it was, she knew that it wouldn’t be good.

  Chapter Two

Heath walked up onto the porch and dusted himself off before entering the house. Their housekeeper, Louisa, would skin him if he tracked dirt and sand onto the high polished wood floors. It had been a long day of rounding up cattle and repairing fences after the recent storm. On a ranch this big there was always something that needed fixing. He had left his brother Malcolm and their team out in the north pasture to complete the needed repairs while he came home to work on the dreaded paperwork. He would rather Malcolm do it, but they had flipped a coin and he lost.

“Senor Heath, you better not be tracking dirt on my clean floors!” Louisa called out.

“No, ma’am. I dusted myself off before coming inside.”

He had fought in some of the toughest hell holes in the world, led an elite unit into some really bad places, but the idea of angering their housekeeper terrified him. Louisa had been with the McLogan family since he was a young child. She was more than just their housekeeper. She was family. Her husband, Tomas, worked for him as well, but Louisa ruled the roost. Who would have thought that a woman, barely over five feet tall, could cause grown men to cower in fear? Sometimes Heath thought that he should just take her on a mission. She’d have the bad guys steppin’ and fetchin’ in no time.

Heath headed into the office and began the task of conquering the mountain of requisitions, orders, and correspondence that was involved with owning and operating one of the largest ranches in Colorado. His baby sister, Elizabeth, helped out, too, but she was busy helping her husband rebuild their home after a drug cartel had shot the place up. They tried to kill her because she witnessed one of their drug smuggling operations. So Heath and Malcolm kept things running smoothly.

Both the brothers had been Navy SEALs, but when their parents were killed in a plane crash, they left the teams to come home and take care of their younger sister, Elizabeth. What surprised him was that his fellow teammates also left the Navy and followed him and Malcolm to Colorado.

The men worked well together, whether they were on a mission or working on the ranch. They each had some form of psychic ability. Because of that they had gravitated toward each other over time and ended up becoming an elite special operations unit. Now they hired out for special missions that the government couldn’t handle or sanction publicly.

All of the men could use telepathy, which came in handy when working in remote terrain where radio signals were unreliable. Some of their other talents included an affinity for tracking, the ability to control animals, and precognition.

Elizabeth also had psychic abilities. She could communicate telepathically and communicate with animals. She often protected the wild animals in the mountains from poachers and hunters. As a matter of fact, one of her closest friends was a lone wolf that followed her everywhere.

Heath spent a couple of hours working in the office before he heard the back door open and the sound of men’s voices as they all came in from work. He saved the document he had been working on as Malcolm and two teammates, Ian and Carlos, came strolling into the office.

  “How’s it going?” Malcolm asked.

Heath growled. “Same shit, different day, asshole.”

“Hey, don’t blame me. You lost the coin flip fair and square.” Malcolm grinned at his brother.

“Right. Next time I’ll flip the coin. Somehow you seem to always win when you do it.”

“Hey, I can’t help it if you always call it wrong.”

“Sure you can’t. Everything okay with the north pasture?” Heath asked.

“Yeah, why shouldn’t it be? The storm didn’t cause too much damage and we managed to get all the cattle rounded up without any problem.” Malcolm looked curiously at Heath.

“Boss, where do you want us tomorrow?” Ian spoke up.

“Everything done in the north pasture?”

“Yeah, all the fences are mended. I was thinking that we might need to go over our gear and hit the shooting range for some practice,” Ian suggested.

Ian had the gift of precognition, so if he said they needed to check their gear and practice shoot
ing, that’s exactly what they would do. Many a man had been saved because of Ian’s gift, so the team paid attention when he spoke. Something was about to happen and the team needed to be prepared.

Heath thought for a moment and then nodded his head. “Sounds like a plan. Let the guys know.”

  I nodded. “Will do.”

“Maybe this time we’ll get to go someplace nice, like Bora Bora?” Carlos teased. “I’m a little tired of the third world toilet holes that we’ve been sent to the last few missions.”

Ian smacked Carlos on the shoulder. “Right, like that’s really gonna happen. Seems like our targets always choose some rat hole to hide in and we end up traipsing all over the world to find them.”

Heath chuckled. “I’ll try to accommodate you, Carlos. I’ll put out an e-mail to the next group of bad guys to pick a more hospitable place just for you.”

“I’d appreciate that, boss. Crawlin’ around in all that nastiness is wreaking havoc with my social skills.”

“Social skills!” Malcolm exclaimed. “You don’t have any social skills unless you count dropping flash bangs as a warm greeting.”

“See. I told you that blowing the shit out of a building was not considered an appropriate way to say hi to someone!” Ian laughed and strolled toward the office door.

“We’ll let the guys know about tomorrow’s assignment, boss,” Carlos said as he followed Ian out the door.

“See ya at dinner, guys,” Heath said.

Malcolm sat down into the overstuffed chair across from the desk and looked at his brother.
